Description
At the end of a busy day it's genuinely hard to remember everything you actually did — which makes writing a standup update or a performance-review summary a chore. Meridian solves this by quietly watching your screen activity in the background and turning it into a plain-English summary by itself.
Meridian is an open-source (MIT-licensed), local-first work journal that reconstructs your workday from screen activity into an interactive timeline, then uses AI (with a choice of Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini as the underlying model) to generate daily summaries and auto-draft standup updates or Jira worklog entries, which it can post directly via a Jira integration. The activity database is encrypted and stored locally, with only minimal data sent to the external AI provider for summarization. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs and Windows 10/11, using roughly 5-10% CPU and up to a few GB of RAM, and needs about 20GB of monthly storage for activity logs.

Against a plain time-tracking app like Toggl, Meridian's differentiator is that it doesn't just log hours against a manually selected project — it reconstructs and summarizes what you actually did from screen activity, then drafts the update text itself. Against writing your own standup notes from memory, the honest comparison is accuracy versus mental effort: Meridian trades a bit of privacy (local screen activity capture, minimal data sent to an external AI) for not having to remember your day. It's open source and free, self-hosted with local encryption, but it's currently Apple Silicon and Windows only — no Intel Mac, no Linux — which will rule it out for some setups.
