Description

Most AI meeting assistants — Otter, Fireflies, and similar tools — work by uploading your call audio to their servers to transcribe and summarize it. That's convenient, but it means a company's private conversations sit on someone else's cloud. Meetily takes the opposite approach: it runs the transcription and summarization models locally on your own laptop, so nothing about the meeting ever has to leave your device unless you choose to send the summary somewhere.

Meetily is an MIT-licensed, open-source desktop app (Rust backend, Next.js/Tauri frontend) for macOS and Windows, with GPU acceleration on Apple Silicon, NVIDIA CUDA, and AMD Vulkan that the project claims runs up to 4x faster than baseline Whisper transcription using the Parakeet model. It supports real-time, multi-language transcription with speaker diarization (telling different speakers apart), and lets you generate summaries through Ollama, Claude, Groq, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint of your choosing. With 27,000+ GitHub stars and an active Discord and subreddit community, it's become one of the more established local-first alternatives in the meeting-assistant space, though Linux users currently have to build from source since there's no pre-compiled binary yet.

💬 Our review

The short version: Meetily is the right call for any team or individual whose meetings involve information that shouldn't touch a third party's servers — legal, healthcare, internal strategy — and it's free, which is hard to beat if local processing already covers your needs.

Against Otter.ai and Fireflies.ai, the two most common cloud-based meeting assistants, Meetily's entire value proposition is the privacy tradeoff: those tools are more polished, integrate more smoothly into calendar and CRM workflows, and don't require you to manage local GPU performance, but they process your audio on their infrastructure. Against Granola, a newer AI notetaker also positioning itself around quality summaries, Meetily's differentiator is that it's genuinely local and free rather than a cloud SaaS with a subscription — you own the compute cost (a decent GPU) instead of a monthly fee. The honest caveats: Linux support requires compiling from source today, which is real friction for a chunk of the open-source-leaning audience Meetily otherwise targets; the paid PRO tier (auto meeting detection, deeper calendar integration) is still in development, so some advertised convenience features aren't production-ready yet; and the free Community Edition lacks polish like PDF/DOCX export or custom summary templates that cloud competitors ship by default. If privacy is a hard requirement, Meetily is close to the only serious open-source option; if convenience and integrations matter more than data locality, Otter or Fireflies remain simpler.
