Outline occupies a sweet spot the giants ignore: Confluence is enterprise sprawl, Notion is a workspace-everything with docs somewhere inside, and Outline just does a knowledge base — fast, clean, with an editor that never makes you wait. Ten thousand commits and a decade of polish show; the recent AI search finally fixed the historical weak spot of finding things. Self-hosted via Docker it's one of the best values in team tooling. The nuances: BSL 1.1 is source-available, not OSI open source — irrelevant for hosting your own team's wiki, relevant if you plan to offer Outline as a service; cloud pricing requires visiting the pricing page since the landing shows only a trial; and if your team needs databases, kanban and docs in one tool, Notion still wins that consolidation game. Purely open-source alternatives (BookStack, Wiki.js) exist but feel a generation older in editing experience. For a dev team's internal documentation — runbooks, ADRs, onboarding — Outline self-hosted is close to the ideal answer, and the cloud version is a fair deal if ops time is scarcer than budget.
