Description

Reading an ebook and wanting to ask "wait, who was this character again?" usually means breaking your flow to search online or flip back through pages. Readr builds that question-answering directly into the reader, with citations back to the actual passage, so you don't have to leave the page.

It supports EPUB, PDF, and Markdown, with highlighting, annotations, and local text-to-speech, and lets you bring your own AI model (ChatGPT, OpenRouter, Anthropic, or a local model via Ollama) rather than locking you into one provider — API keys are stored in the device keychain. It's open source (MIT license), available on iOS, iPad, and Apple silicon Macs, with no telemetry and no account required.

💬 Our review

The short version: for a reader who wants AI-assisted comprehension without handing a big tech company their reading habits, Readr's privacy-first, bring-your-own-model design is a rare combination in this space.

The tradeoff is a smaller, Apple-only ecosystem versus Kindle's reach or Apple Books' native integration — and DRM-free formats only, so anything bought through Kindle or a DRM-locked store won't work. For a technical reader already comfortable managing API keys and willing to trade ecosystem size for zero telemetry and model choice, Readr is a genuinely distinctive option; for casual readers who just want a big library and one-tap purchases, Kindle remains the simpler default.
