Description

Imagine two long lists posted once a month — one of companies hiring, one of people looking for jobs — and having to read through hundreds of forum posts by hand to figure out which ones might actually be a fit. That's literally how job-hunting has worked for years on Hacker News, a popular tech news site whose monthly hiring threads are legendary in the developer community but painful to search manually. HN Match automates that matching: it reads through both threads and tells you which job posts best fit your background, or which candidates best fit your opening, complete with a score explaining why.

Every month, Hacker News runs two threads — "Who is hiring?" and "Who wants to be hired?" — each drawing hundreds of comments from companies and job seekers respectively. HN Match ingests both threads and runs an AI-scoring pipeline that compares each candidate against each job posting on skill overlap, domain expertise, seniority level, salary expectations, and hard constraints like remote-vs-onsite. It surfaces two browsing modes (jobs matched to a given candidate, and candidates matched to a given job), each match link is shareable, and incompatible pairs are filtered out automatically before you ever see them. The whole thing is free, with no account required to browse.

💬 Our review

The short version: HN Match takes a genuinely annoying manual task — combing through hundreds of forum comments once a month — and turns it into a searchable, scored shortlist, for free.

There's no direct incumbent doing exactly this for HN threads specifically; the closest comparisons are general job boards (LinkedIn, Wellfound/AngelList, We Work Remotely) or generic resume-matching SaaS, which all require you to build a profile and compete in a much larger applicant pool. HN Match's edge is that it's scoped tightly to the HN hiring-thread community, which self-selects for a fairly senior, tech-heavy audience, and it produces its match list automatically from public thread data rather than asking you to fill out another profile. The tradeoff is real: it only covers HN's monthly threads (a much smaller pool than LinkedIn), match quality depends entirely on how well someone happened to word their HN comment, and it's a single-maintainer side project with no support SLA. Worth trying the same week a new hiring thread drops, since matches are only as fresh as the current month's threads; skip it if you need year-round job search coverage across the wider market — pair it with a mainstream board like LinkedIn or Wellfound for that.
