Description

Letting an AI agent buy and sell stocks on its own sounds risky — which is exactly the problem OpenTrade tries to manage. Instead of trusting an agent blindly, OpenTrade puts a supervised harness between your AI coding agent and your actual brokerage account, so the agent can act but you keep the guardrails.

OpenTrade is an open-source (Elastic License 2.0, source-available) macOS app, built for Apple Silicon, that connects Claude Code or Codex agents to a Robinhood Agentic Trading account through Robinhood's official MCP. It supports manual or automatic order approval, background turn limits, per-agent order accounting, real-time event monitoring, and multi-agent orchestration, so several agent sessions can run trading strategies in parallel while a human retains oversight and can step in at any point. It runs locally on the user's machine rather than as a hosted service, and updates itself from GitHub Releases.

💬 Our review

The short version: OpenTrade is a niche but well-built safety layer for a very specific and currently unusual use case — using coding agents like Claude Code or Codex to trade a real brokerage account — not a general trading platform for humans.

Against a traditional algo-trading framework, the differentiator is that OpenTrade is built specifically around agentic coding tools rather than custom trading scripts, which matters if your workflow already lives inside Claude Code or Codex. Against just letting an agent call the Robinhood API directly with no supervision, OpenTrade's whole value is the guardrails: approval gates, turn limits, and per-agent accounting exist precisely to prevent a runaway agent from making unsupervised trades. It's explicitly experimental (built by Exla Corp, unaffiliated with Robinhood, Anthropic, or OpenAI) and requires an Apple Silicon Mac and a Robinhood Agentic Trading account, so it's not something to reach for casually — real money and real financial risk are involved.
