Description

Picture a shared whiteboard and notebook that lives inside the same folder as your team's actual project files, instead of a separate app you have to remember to update. That is the idea behind Marktwin: rather than asking you to move your notes into a new silo like Notion or a wiki, it opens the Markdown files already sitting in your GitHub repository and turns them into a live, collaborative space -- you and your teammates can write, draw on a canvas, discuss ideas, and decide on next steps together, then send the results back to the same repository where your code and docs already live.

Technically, Marktwin connects to a GitHub repo and syncs changes as checkpoints, so file history stays tied to Git rather than a proprietary database -- the maker states 'we never see your content,' implying the workspace works more like a peer-to-peer editing layer than a server that stores your files. The current free tier includes Text (Markdown), Canvas, and Drawing formats, live real-time collaboration with unlimited guests during its early-access period, and a 'Decisions' feature with basic templates for tracking group choices. There is deliberately no built-in AI yet; the maker frames this as keeping context 'in files you control.' A paid Pro tier is planned (pricing not yet announced) that would add an AI teammate, comments and search, automation, and native macOS/iOS/Android/Windows apps, alongside a custom-priced Enterprise tier with SSO, GitLab support, and self-hosted deployment. As of August 2026 the product is in early access and the entire current feature set is free.

💬 Our review

The short version: Marktwin is a clever, genuinely different idea -- a real-time collaborative workspace that lives inside your GitHub repo instead of replacing it -- and everything it currently offers is free, though the roadmap's AI and paid features are still unbuilt.

Against Notion, the most obvious point of comparison given the maker's own framing, Marktwin's pitch is that your content stays in Markdown files in a repo you control rather than locked inside Notion's proprietary database -- a real advantage for engineering teams who already live in GitHub, at the cost of Notion's much larger feature set (databases, wikis, integrations) and gentler learning curve for non-technical users. Against HackMD, a more direct Markdown-collaboration competitor, Marktwin adds canvas/drawing and a GitHub-native sync model that HackMD does not emphasize, but HackMD has years more maturity and a public API. The free tier is a strong deal simply because it is free and fully functional today, including unlimited guests during early access; the catch is that this is a brand-new product (Show HN'd Aug 28, 2026) from a team with no public track record yet, and its planned Pro/Enterprise tiers -- including the AI teammate feature -- are neither priced nor built. Worth trying for GitHub-centric teams right now, precisely because there is no cost to test it; do not count on the roadmap items yet.
