Description

Editing a podcast usually means adapting a music-production tool like Audacity to a job it wasn't built for — or paying for something like Descript. Podlibre is built from scratch specifically for podcasters: an open-source, free desktop editor that handles noise reduction, transcription, and publishing without a subscription.

Podlibre is an open-source, cross-platform desktop app for editing and publishing podcasts, funded by Ad Aures (the team behind the open-source hosting platform Castopod) and NLnet. It covers noise and mouth-noise reduction, multi-channel audio editing, music insertion, local on-device transcription with manual correction, chapter editing, and ID3/RSS metadata editing, and can publish directly to Castopod, Funkwhale, or Faircamp. Rather than a fixed feature set, it's designed as a flexible framework podcasters can shape to their own workflow. It's still in active development and was presented at FOSDEM 2026.

💬 Our review

The short version: Podlibre is a promising, genuinely free alternative to paying for Descript or fighting Audacity's generic interface — but it's still in active development, so expect some rough edges compared to established paid tools.

Descript offers a more polished, AI-heavy editing experience (filler-word removal, overdub) but costs a real monthly fee and keeps you inside its ecosystem; Audacity is free but wasn't designed for podcast-specific workflows like chapter and RSS metadata editing. Podlibre's bet is being purpose-built for podcasters while staying free and open source, backed by a team (Ad Aures) with a track record via Castopod — but as an actively-developed project, it's worth checking its current feature completeness against your specific workflow before fully switching over from a mature paid tool.
