Continue

Continue is the open-source engine you can drop into VS Code or JetBrains to get AI code suggestions and edits without being locked into one company's black-box coding assistant — you choose which AI model powers it.

Description

Most AI coding assistants bundle the AI model and the editor plugin together, so you're stuck with whatever model the vendor picked and however they price it. Continue takes a different approach: it's an open-source layer you install into your existing editor (VS Code or JetBrains) that connects to the AI model of your choice, giving you AI-assisted code completion, chat and edits while keeping you in control of the underlying model and your code.

Continue was built as a fully open-source, configurable coding agent, and the project was acquired by Cursor; its GitHub repository (35k+ stars) remains public but is now archived/read-only, with the final release at v2.0.0 and its docs and pricing pages returning 404. The extension itself still installs and works today for developers already using it, but active development and support have effectively stopped.

💬 Our review

The short version: Continue was a solid open, model-agnostic alternative to GitHub Copilot or Cursor, and existing installs still work — but since its acquisition by Cursor and the freeze of its repository, it's no longer a living product you should adopt going forward.

Against GitHub Copilot (deeply integrated, actively developed, subscription-based) or Cursor itself (now Continue's own parent company, actively developed AI-first editor), Continue's edge was always openness and model choice without vendor lock-in. That edge doesn't matter much anymore if the project itself isn't maintained. Worth knowing about for context or if you already depend on it; not worth starting fresh with in 2026 — new users are better off evaluating Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or another actively maintained open-source agent.
