Terminai
A free tool that adds an AI assistant to your existing terminal — press Ctrl+Space and it suggests a command, but always asks before running anything.
🔗 Visit TerminaiDescription
Some AI terminal tools try to replace your terminal entirely, which means giving up features and muscle memory you already rely on. Terminai instead sits transparently on top of the terminal you already use: press Ctrl+Space, describe what you want in plain English, and it suggests a shell command — but it never runs anything without your explicit approval first.
It's a free, open-source (MIT) tool written in Rust for performance and easy distribution, supporting multiple AI backends (Claude, Codex, OpenCode, or custom). It includes a mandatory approval flow before any suggested command executes, a risk classification system (safe/caution/dangerous), and configurable privacy filtering to mask sensitive data before it's sent to a model. It's distributed via Homebrew or precompiled binaries for macOS and Linux.
💬 Our review
The short version: if you like the idea of an AI assistant in your terminal but don't want to hand over command execution blindly, Terminai's mandatory approval step and risk classification make it one of the safer ways to try this, for free.
Against GitHub Copilot CLI and aider, which integrate AI more deeply into specific workflows (Copilot into command suggestion, aider into git-based coding sessions), Terminai's differentiator is staying transparent and non-invasive — it doesn't touch your shell configuration or interfere with existing scrollback and copy/paste behavior, and its approval-gated flow with danger classification is a genuine safety feature the others don't foreground as clearly. The tradeoffs are that it's Unix/macOS/Linux only, it depends on an external API connection to whichever model backend you choose, and there's a learning curve to tune its privacy filtering patterns well.
