CAD Skills

A free toolkit that teaches AI coding assistants how to design real, manufacturable parts and robots from a plain-English description, then export them in the file formats a 3D printer or fabrication shop actually needs.

Description

Turning a design idea into a real CAD file has traditionally required learning specialized software like SolidWorks or Fusion 360. CAD Skills instead lets an AI coding assistant do that translation — you describe what you want in plain language, and the AI, equipped with this toolkit, produces an actual usable design file.

CAD Skills is a free, open-source (10,400+ GitHub stars) skills library that gives AI agents like Claude Code and Codex the ability to generate, edit and manage CAD models, robot designs and hardware files. It supports 8+ export formats (STEP, STL, 3MF, GLB, DXF, URDF, SRDF, SDF, G-code), integrates with SendCutSend for fabrication validation and Bambu Labs printers for direct 3D printing, and supports MoveIt2 inverse kinematics planning for robot simulation. It includes 10 benchmark examples demonstrating its capabilities, runs entirely locally with no cloud dependency, and has a live demo available separately at demo.cadskills.xyz.

💬 Our review

The short version: CAD Skills is a genuinely useful bridge between 'I can describe what I want' and 'I have a file I can actually 3D print or fabricate,' and being free, local and open source means there's no subscription or cloud dependency standing between an idea and a printable part.

This sits in a fairly new and narrow niche — AI-agent skill libraries for hardware/CAD generation — so there isn't yet an established direct competitor to compare pricing or maturity against; the more useful comparison is against learning traditional CAD software (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or Onshape) from scratch, where CAD Skills clearly lowers the barrier to a first working design, especially for makers and roboticists who aren't full-time mechanical engineers. It won't replace deep CAD expertise for complex, tolerance-critical engineering work — an AI-generated design from a natural-language description should still get a human sanity check before you commit material to fabrication — but for rapid prototyping, hobby robotics, and quick hardware iteration, the direct SendCutSend and Bambu Labs integrations make the path from idea to physical object unusually short.
