Chat2DB

Chat2DB

A database tool where you can type a question in plain English — like "show me last month's top customers" — and it writes and runs the correct database query for you, instead of you having to know SQL by heart.

Description

Working with a database usually means knowing SQL well enough to write the right query, which is a real barrier even for people who understand exactly what data they need. Chat2DB adds an AI assistant on top of a full-featured database client so you can describe what you want in plain language and get a working query back, while still giving experienced users a proper SQL editor when they want to write queries by hand.

Chat2DB is an open-source (Apache 2.0 for versions before 5.3.0; newer versions use a source-available license based on Apache 2.0) database GUI client with a Java backend and JavaScript/Node.js frontend, reporting around 26,400 GitHub stars. It supports 30+ databases including MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, ClickHouse, MongoDB, Redis, SQLite, Snowflake and BigQuery, available as a desktop app or via Docker deployment, with a separate CLI version (Chat2DB-CLI) that supports MCP for AI-agent integration. Commercial Pro and Enterprise editions are available alongside the free community edition.

💬 Our review

The short version: if you regularly work across multiple different databases and want an AI assistant that can translate plain-English questions into working SQL, Chat2DB's broad database support and free community edition make it a solid, low-risk tool to add to your workflow.

The 30+ database support is genuinely broad — few competing clients cover Snowflake, BigQuery, ClickHouse and traditional relational databases in one tool — which matters a lot for anyone who deals with a mixed data-infrastructure environment rather than a single database type. One thing worth noting for anyone evaluating the open-source claim closely: newer versions (5.3.0+) moved from a fully permissive Apache 2.0 license to a source-available license, a common pattern when a project needs to fund continued development — check which version and license applies before betting a commercial product on the "open source" framing. Against DBeaver, the most common free alternative, Chat2DB's AI-assisted query generation is the clear differentiator; DBeaver remains the safer choice if license purity matters more to you than the AI features.
