Dodo Payments
Billing and payments platform for AI-first and indie SaaS companies, acting as Merchant of Record so you don't handle tax compliance yourself.
🔗 Visit Dodo PaymentsDescription
Selling software online sounds simple until you realize you also need to handle sales tax in dozens of countries, VAT in Europe, currency conversion, chargebacks, and license delivery — all before your product itself is even the hard part. Dodo Payments takes that entire back office off your plate: it collects the money, figures out the tax, and hands you a dashboard, acting as the legal "merchant of record" so the compliance headache is contractually theirs, not yours.
Dodo Payments is a billing and payments platform built for AI-first companies, indie hackers and micro-SaaS founders. As Merchant of Record it handles VAT/GST tax compliance across 220+ countries and 40+ payment methods, supports credit-based, usage-based, subscription and hybrid billing models, and includes license key management, digital product delivery, no-code checkout, and REST/GraphQL APIs. It also ships an AI billing agent ("Sentra") with IDE integration for wiring up billing logic directly from a code editor.
💬 Our review
The short version: Dodo Payments is a good fit for solo founders and small AI-product teams who want to start charging money globally without hiring a finance person to handle tax compliance.
The Merchant-of-Record model is the actual value proposition here, shared with Paddle, Lemon Squeezy and Creem: instead of you registering for VAT in the EU or sales tax in US states, Dodo takes on that legal liability at 4% + $0.40 per transaction (higher than Stripe's raw ~2.9% + $0.30, but Stripe doesn't handle your tax filings). The honest trade-off is the same one every MoR platform makes — you give up some control over the checkout and payout timing in exchange for not dealing with international tax law, and the credit-based/usage billing flexibility mainly matters if you're actually selling AI API access rather than a flat subscription. For an indie SaaS or AI wrapper selling globally from day one, the MoR fee is cheap insurance; for a company that already has a finance team and just needs raw payment processing, plain Stripe is usually cheaper.
